A little over four years ago; I met Herm when I signed up for his boot camp class. I was in pretty good shape when it came to cardio; however I really wanted to improve my muscle definition; which I completely lacked in my upper body. I remember back to the first class when we had to do push-ups; this was definitely my weakness! I couldn’t even do 1 push up from my feet; now I can probably do 30 continuously. It really didn’t take long before I could see a change in my body and increased strength.
The first year; I religiously attended boot camp 3 days a week and dropped 12 Ibs. The best part about boot camp was that every class was different; you never knew what to expect. If one of us saw a new type of exercise or piece of equipment; we only had to mention it to Herm and the next thing we knew; it was incorporated into a class.
Four years later of attending boot camp; I can say the classes were always interesting and unexpected for what area of the body we were going to be working on each time. Going into the 2nd year; I wanted to add on to this fitness addition so I tried one of Herm’s boxing classes; I was hooked after the first class! It didn’t take long before I asked Herm to order me my own gloves. This class was a lot of fun because it was very different from my normal running and boot camp. After about 6 months I finally convinced my husband to try the class; which he had been dead set against taking classes.
I think it really surprised him how much he liked the class; in which we attended together 2 days a week for 2 ½ years. Herm did an outstanding job at motivating and pushing us over the years. With his small group classes; a few of us started to get pretty competitive and would push each other in each class. The core group of fitness friends we have made over the years from attending Herm’s boot camp and boxing classes have been a very important part of our life.
We all motivated each other to run races; from 5K, 10K, ½ Marathon’s, Warrior Dash and Ragnar Relay; it doesn’t matter your ability; it is about doing races together with close fitness friends! Herm started out as just a trainer in our life but has since become an extended family member. Our families have become very close over the years; a friendship that we will always cherish.

I met Herman in 2008. He was my trainer for five years, and is my friend for life! Herman’s positive attitude is the reason I enjoy working out. His persistence that I could hit the speed bag is the most valuable memory from all those years ago. “I couldn’t…I can’t,” my common replies in the beginning. After hearing Herman say, “Yes, you can!” pushed me in the right direction! He nicknamed me “Rocklena” as I continued to “rock” hitting the speed bag. I was, and am, known as “Rock”. Not only were the workouts that Herman led the driving force behind my fitness and health, the nickname motivates me too! I think, “I really am a Rock!” and that leads me to push myself harder. Herman has a knack of helping an individual enjoy working out and thinking positive all at the same time! And I have I mentioned the laughter? The laughter helps keep a person’s abs strong! J Just ask Herm to quote one of his favorite movies…that’ll tickle your funny bone!
I have always been a gal who continually struggles with being heavier. Herman helped me to understand that it’s not all about losing weight, it’s about being healthy! After feeling toned muscles in my body it all made sense!
Overall, meeting Herman was a gift from God. This testimonial is a BIG THANK YOU to my friend, “Thanks for everything, Herm!”

Three years ago, I was recovering from a serious illness. I was scared and very reluctant to join another gym class. I didn't think I would get the attention I needed to get healthy, nor would I be able to keep up with the class.
Herman, changed all that! His classes were kept small and very personalized. He LISTENED to me as I told him my limitations. Together we came up with a workout plan of 3 days a week. He kept the workouts challenging for our individual levels. Every day was a new workout, making it fun and exciting. Boxing, TRX, Tabata circuits were just some of the different workouts we did.
Herman's personal training goes beyond the gym. He is such a caring compassionate guy. He would always communicate via text message or phone call if you missed a class. Sending encouraging notes on race days for the group, being supportive on our own personal goals. I have since completed a 5K, 7K & 10K. Herman was my biggest cheerleader!
Three years ago, Herman Gilbert was just a personal trainer at the gym. Today, he is my friend and a great role model of fitness. He truly loves helping others reach their fitness goals, mind, body and spirit!

I had the pleasure of training with Herman for 3 years. As a woman in my 50’s, who had very little experience with working out, I was a bit nervous and skeptical to begin an exercise routine. Herman was very encouraging throughout. I was continually impressed with his knowledge, experience and positive manner. He helped me to accomplish more than I thought I could as I gained strength, stamina and confidence. His knowledge of training and form made it easy for him to modify exercises for individuals with different needs and requirements. I would would not hesitate to recommend Herman to anyone as a trainer for he is personally invested in seeing that each client reach their full potential.

I started taking boxing classes with Herm not long after I completed my first half marathon. Even though I’ve always been in better than average shape, after my first class my arms were so sore that I was scared to go back! But I managed to make it to a second class and then many more after that. By the time my next half marathon came around a few months later, I was in better shape than ever and managed to improve my time by 12 minutes! Herm is not your stereotypical trainer. His demeanor is never intimidating or judgmental, but always encouraging and approachable. His upbeat energy means classes are never boring, and he’s always looking to incorporate new exercises that will challenge you. Classes are fun even when you are sweating like crazy and exhausted! The great thing about Herm is that he is not just focused on his clients’ physical fitness and progress, but also cares about their overall well-being. He truly embodies physical fitness, healthfulness, and happiness as a lifestyle, not just an occupation.

Firm Foundation Fitness has the capability of filling everyone's fitness needs. Herman Gilbert (proprietor) is enthusiastic, motivated, and understanding of individuals and their fitness needs. His workouts are tuned to the individual, and are always fun and challenging. I do not know of any other trainer who could keep me working out for 3 years running. He is tuned into the fitness community and never stops adding new workouts and keeping his programs fresh. I cannot emphasize enough on how that keeps you coming back for more and more. In the end he has turned out to be an awesome trainer and a good friend.

This year I made a commitment to myself to get healthier and in better physical condition. Because I lack self-discipline, I knew I would need someone to help me. I'm not a "public" exerciser so gyms were not an option. I'd read about Herman and Sharon in our local newspaper. I called them and they came to my house and did a thorough evaluation of my current physical condition. We also talked about my goals,e.g., weight loss, toning of certain muscle groups, etc. The fact that they came to my house was, initially, one of the main reasons I chose them. I would be accountable to someone so no more putting off my workout until "later."
At our first meeting, Herman and Sharon brought a workout routine personalized for me, based on my workout goals. They were just as excited and committed to helping me reach my goals as I was. The workouts weren't easy, but they pushed me and encouraged me throughout each session. I appreciated how adamant they were about making sure I did the exercises the correct way so as not to injury myself. I've been working out with them for 8 weeks now. I can see results in muscle building/toning and stamina during exercise.
I truly enjoy my time with Herman and Sharon, not only because of the workout benefits, but also because they are friendly, positive, and a joy to be with. They're no longer just personal trainers that come to my house, but friends I look forward to seeing each week!

I recently joined a gym and hired a personal trainer -- action steps I decided to take as part of a personal goal. I needed to start doing something different so I could get a different result. It turns out that my trainer, Herman, was a boxer in his 20's, and also had trained amateur boxers. I had done some kick-boxing classes before, so he asked if I was interested in throwing some punches. I decided to give it a try.
The first time I put on those gloves it was like someone put the magic hat on the snowman: something inside me came alive. I felt feisty, energized, and focused.
Focus is defined as "a central point, as of attraction, attention or activity," (www.dictionary.reference.com). Focus takes energy and purpose, determination and conviction.
Herman says I have great focus during my workouts. We talk, joke & laugh in between sets, but while I'm working, I'm focused on the work. My personal challenge is to achieve & hold that level of focus when I'm working out on my own.
I often say, "You can't have everything, but you can have anything. You just have to decide what 'anythings' you want." It's all about focus -- deciding what it is you want, committing to go get it, and focusing your time, energy and other resources on achieving success.
After throwing a few punches with Herman, I have a new understanding of my ability to focus. Our work together is not only supporting my fitness goals, but spilling over into my work & other areas of my life. When I feel stuck, I think about putting on those gloves, and soon after, I'm moving again.
What would be possible for you if you had more focus? Do you know what "anythings" you want? Where in your life do you have superior focus? What does it feel like? How can you translate that level of focus into other areas of your life?
Isn't it time you "put your gloves on"?

I am in my early forties and work in the construction trade, (really physical work days). I was in fairly decent shape to start with, but have issues with back pain from some previous injuries. I had never consistently worked out before. After 6 months of working out with FFF, 3 times a week, I see great improvement in my core. My stomach, upper back, legs, arms, shoulders and neck are stronger and have much more definition. I am not afraid to take my shirt if anywhere! It is easier to do my job with the increased strength and flexibility. FFF was very comprehensive in their approach to my program design, doing detailed pre-testing on my fitness level and listening to my goals and concerns. I would highly recommend FFF to any individual or family that wants to increase and engage in more physical fitness. FFF has always been respectful, flexible and responsive to my needs.
-Terry F.
Note: Terry has attained some pretty spectacular results; he started with a BMI of 30.8 which is now it is now 27.1. He started with a fat percentage of 24.9 which is now 17.6. Hard work has truly paid dividends for Terry; way to go!
